Battery explosions are kind of common with unfused paralleled batteries. The fact that it was maintenance proof is not part of the problem.
When I did a lot of boat work before the depression, I got to deal with 5 ~ 6 a season in a 300 slip marina. And three times that number where one bad battery would kill the good one.
