I think the true deep cycle decision is smart. On price, most people decide to go with AGM or flooded first, then if they go flooded, they either go with a Sam's Club or other big box true deep cycle 6 volt, or the Trojans. I went with the former, as the cost differential made it so the Trojans would have to last nearly twice as long - which was unlikely to happen. If I was sailing around the world, and couldn't find a local supplier in Tahiti to replace the batteries, I would have purchased Trojans, but I'm reasonably confident the Sam's Club will last at least half as long, and perhaps just as long as the Trojans.
Your problem was the "maintenance free" design and its inherent design problems. I doubt more expensive "maintenance free" batteries would have helped much.
