We've had springs break and there is no way you would not hear that happen. The springs do get old and have loose tension. We've replaced ours once but it's getting to the point again where we are using the awning hook to push up on the roller, it rolls up a little, push again, rolls up more, push again etc until toward the end it finally closes all the way.
