MC4 Solar Connectors. Good & Bad ??

I know the MC4 parallel connectors are different in quality, because when one broke for no reason last year, the replacement was much heavier in the center section where it broke,
Now today I had the 2nd positive MC4 connector break in the threads that hold the cap over the strain relief. As before, they break for no reason,....altho I know using the panels as portable, they do get handled much more than if on the roof.
At any rate, replacing/installing MC4s is not my most favorite thing to do, so in both cases I just chopped the connectors off, and soldered the wire direct to the controller input wire. 3 panels on the roof now, 1 w/ connectors, 2 w/o. No more portable panels, just too much hastle.
But I was curious about the MC4s, anyone have any break ? Is there good, and better MC4s out there ?

  • Tools ???
For taking them apart ?.....as in replacing them ? For just separating them as in disconnecting, I see no need for a tool. Now when it comes to taking them apart,.....like getting that metal connector out, (the one that snaps in) I never could figure that out, so just chopped them off. I would investigate the tool, but doubt I'll be messin w/ them any more. Something I like about the soldered/liquid rubberized connection better. At least if any panel ever drops off line, I won't have to wonder about a bad connection.
The broken MC4s, are my very first failures of all the inexpensive China equipment I have bought, including panels and controllers.
  • So far no issues with mine either. The tool is handy if you want to take them apart.
  • The ones as pigtails on my 230 are aluminum wires so I cut them short and go copper wiring from there. Don't use the actual connectors like they have. Maybe you had UV damage?
  • Never had a MC4 in my paws for inspection, but do they not offer a 'special tool' for connection/ separation?
