PowerMax says they have a very low failure rate on their units which they can be proud of. They say if they do get a "return" it is usually the thermistor.
They upgraded the thermistor in the more recent models and are working on a redesign of the whole front end to eliminate even that low number of returns. IMO they are a good outfit--(I am just a happy customer, no affiliation!)
It is possible some of those PM3s still for sale out there have the original sized thermistors. IMO based on my fun with that, they should be ok as long as you avoid hot restarts and clamp on before plugging in, which is needed because if you plug in first it will heat up the thermistor which then can't take the in-rush when you do clamp on, especially if you have set it to 14.8 or so.
I guess most people have them installed as converters so they are always "clamped on" so that version of a hot restart never happens. When you use it as a portable, it is easy to forget the sequence ( yes :( )so watch out for that! :)
