It could. That's what I call a hot restart. It might take several of those before the thermistor finally fails, or just one. I had one with the thermistor still working even though pieces had broken off after it overheated.
Luckily, the thermistor is placed where you can drill out the legs (from underneath the circuit board) in the big solder spots they have and then put a new one in from the top. The new one has extra long legs, so when you get it down to the right height from above, you add some new solder above and below, and snip off the legs underneath, and you are good to go :)
I have used my PM3-100 many times now without trouble since the last thermistor change (and upgrade) last winter and the thermistor I last put in is still in good shape. An SL32-2R025.
