My Peak 40 amper is the same. Turns out its led readout is sporadic, at best, reading anywhere from 14.7 to 15.2 volts, all the while pumping out 15.2 volts. (I can hear Mex now... that oughtta learn ya!) This, along with poor ventilation above my batts, and high ambient temps, were indeed the cause of the excessive gassing they did. I've done even higher voltage charges since, with the batt compartment lid open and the windows open, on 70+F days, and there is very little gassing.
Yes, plug and play is the goal, within reason, of course. And today's technologies are way ahead of the mass production rv industry. When I first thought to build my rv, I thought back to an interview with Rush bass player Geddie Lee. In it he said the band was concerned with not being able to reproduce, live, some the music they were making in the studio. And bringing his concerns to an Engineer, Producer, ??? the guy told him "Geddie, just concentrate on making the music, and let technology take care of the rest" This advice has been extremely helpful for me.
For example, when I started the project, wireless internet was not so readily available and very expensive. Now I can go pretty much anywhere and have access to wireless, wifi, or whatever, and watch videos, surf the net, get upset with other rv'ers who don't see things my way... the sky's the limit!
Another example would be the better fans and pumps available. Someone on the forum mentioned their 10a water pump in a thread... I darn near fell off my chair! My 40 pounder low flow draws like 3a. And the 8" fan and small pump I used for my heat system use a grand total of 1.5 amps! Compare those numbers to a standard rv f.a.g. furnace.
And now we are being made familiar with the latest switching power supplies (and lets not forget that's what powermax converters are), and that's opening up a whole new realm of possibilities. Lower draw with pfc, compact size, increasingly competitive pricing... but it's still up to us to put these new technologies to the test. Folks sometimes ask me, "but don't you get bored, living in the rv?" To which I reply, I don't have time to get bored! Between working , hiking, swimming, kayaking, and looking for ways to improve on the rv... bored? H*ll, I need a vacation!!!
