Here's an experiment for you: Take your IR gun and aim it on the heatsink, directly in line with the device you're cooling. After you get a stable measurement, move the IR aiming 1"-2" from center, anywhere in an arc around the perimeter of your previous center point. Even with this small distance, you can calculate the thermal dissipation of your heatsink.
BTW, my neighbor dropped off A Pentium heatsink. Yours for the asking. Fins are about 3" long.
