Microwave makes strange static sound????

Hi
The microwave in my 3 year old bullet started making this strange sound when it was plugged in - not running - just plugged in. Sort of a crumpled paper, static sound that would be loud enough to hear all through the trailer and that comes and goes.

I called Keystone. They were not overly helpful. The person I talked to suggested I just have it replaced. I asked him who makes the "Highpointe" microwave - he didn't even know and sent me off on a wild goose chase calling 1800 numbers that are no longer in service. I found out eventually that it is made by the Guangdong Midea Micorwave and Electrical Appliances Manufacturing Company from the Peoples Republic of China. I am sure they will answer my inquiry with post haste as they are all about making trustworthy products and excel in customer service - won't be holding my breath.

Any ideas if this is something that could be fixed? How hard is it to replace a microwave in an RV - just take the shroud off and find a new one the same size??

Thanks for your time.

  • Looks like most folks are saying toss it in the trash and buy a new one
It's a throw away / buy another society

Wish I was closer - those little 900watt Microwaves are actually a nice unit and very easy and low cost to repair. An inverter can easily power them. Check with some local handymen I'm sure they can get you fixed up for less than $50.00 without tossing it in the trash
  • I suspect many just measure the current microwave and buy a replacement at the local big box - DIY replacement isn't hard if you have the strength to lift the microwave.
  • Sounds should not be coming from it. Perhaps a critter is in the external exhaust pipe if you have one. In any case I would unplug it immediately. If the sound goes away, so does the microwave. I'm an ET. Electronic tech that is. Not an alien.
  • I replaced mine a couple years ago. I got a pair of the rubber tips they use on chair legs and cut them short. I then ran a screw into the center of each spaced so the micro legs fit over them and it hasn't moved.
