Mini fuel cell generates electricity directly from fire

This company is apparently now shipping these little fuel cells -- you stick one end in a flame, and the other end charges a cell phone:

No word on how much this "Voto" unit costs or whether it can be scaled up to charge a 12 volt deep cycle battery. But if this pans out, maybe we could use the propane tank to run a burner outside and use that instead of a generator?

(PS -- Dear Moderator -- I was not sure whether this news should go on the "tech issues" forum or "technology corner." I'm sorry if it is in the wrong place!)

  • Ahh Seebeck effect then. Mex yes lots of heat for tiny electricity, to be sure.

At those temperatures, the peltier junction would melt.

Iron-constantan thermocouples work very nicely up to 800°C.
  • A little disproportionate for rational charging...

  • It's just another application of the thermocouple.

It's not new; in the '50s the Russians were making a special chimney for a kerosene lamp to power a transistor radio.
  • Cannot wait for a larger version. I'd go for a campfire or BBQ version that could put out more amps.

I have been tracking the USB ones since they came out. Extremely interesting.
