My guess is he recently had an oil change and the cover did not get put back properly.
We have a Nissan 4x4 with a bolt on cover below the oil filter. After an oil change outside of my supervision it came back with only one of the four bolts holding the cover on.
Usually I change my own oil because of things like this.
