"When at rest, however, I believe the FLA will draw the AGM down first. The FLA will self discharge faster and simply draw the AGM down with it. Why would that be a design goal?"
I always have at least a Float from charger or solar when batts are banked/ connected, except for a few days in a row in winter when doing 50-90s in the woods maybe five times a year when connected but no float. Say Jan, Feb, Mar, and Nov ( like last week for four days). Camping Apr-Oct would have solar and for more days in a row--sometimes weeks in a row) Stay home from mid-Nov to mid Jan.
After those times, at home I do the usual recovery routine for each type of battery separately, then bank all on a float around 13.7v till next time out.
I know everyone has his own routine and circumstances--once size does not fit all.
