That is why you ALWAYS use a catastrophic failure fuse, and one of the right type. In the case of low resistance AGM batteries, you want CLASS-T or better. A dead short across my battery bank will deliver more than 8000 amps. The Class T is rated to interrupt a DC arc of at least 20,000 amps.
I've seen pictures of installs where people have used ANL fuses in multi-battery systems, which is woefully inadequate. The cheap ANL can only interrupt around 2500 amps. A little better are the installs using DC breakers, usually rated at 5000 amps
