Fuel filter can affect millage, if it's dirty and partially clogged the engine will alternate between starved and rich as the computer makes adustments, Not a good thing, That said it is fairly far down the check list.
Spark plugs, and their wires, timing sensors. Injectors epically if you buy cheap fuel, and a host of other things come first.. Even if there is no error code a professional reader may find out a few things or one of the real-time engine monitors.
I had rodent damage to some wires... I was able to tell the engine was mis-firing but my wife could not (Chevy V8) If Id have had a Ford V-10 I'm not sure even I'd have heard the misfire.
