VW is having problems with casting residue too, and it clogs up the heater core ( full dash removal for that one) the EGR, and the water pump/ thermostat. Poor quality control on a little diesel motor made in Poland by VW. They never learn..
I'd go look at an aftermarket coolant filter. I installed one on my Ford 6.0 diesel and it catches a lot of junk. I haven't had the oil cooler (uses engine coolant) plugging problems like a lot have had. One of the problems now days is finding room in the engine compartment........
