My Solar Install

I have been meaning to post this for a while. I have been researching on this forum for at least a year now on what to do. Funny how this started as a way to top up my battery, to what it is now. To start with, 80-90% of our camping is boondocking, and I was getting tired of running the honda- especially when we had people very close by.

Hope someone finds this useful, I know how much I learned from all the other installs posted here.

I posted this on my review of the Rogue MPT-3048, but I'll re-post my final config
Sharp 2x235W (ND-L235Q2)- connected in series Voc= 37.2V, Isc= 8.59A, Vpmax= 30.0V, Ipmax= 7.81A 10awg wiring from panel to controller, approx 40ft run
Battery: 2x Trojan 6V T-105 in series (225 AH @ 20 hr rate)

Rogue MPT-3048 (installed after these pics were taken)

Also, have a Xantrex 2000W Prowatt inverter 2/0 awg wiring from battery to bus bar/blue sea 300A switch (approx 3ft)

I really only needed one panel, but I I figured I wouldn't have to worry about tilting or cloudy days with two.

Step one, remove TV antenna, and lay out for the rails- clearly I don't clean under the antenna...

After with rails mounted

Getting the panels ready to mount on roof- they aren't light....

One step closer

And they are on, with not much room left...

  • Nice job.

Are you only watching your television at night? You certainly don't want to have that shadow on your new solar panel instal.

  • Looks great but I think I will pay for someone to install mine. Glad you could do it yourself.

I am thinking of that or one of the small turbines - looks like the size of a large juice can or coffee can - saw it when Bill Nye, the Science Guy and Ed Begley, Jr were trying to one up each other.

Gotta plan for "if" and "when" we have to bug out due to a hurricane. It has been too quiet the last few years in the Gulf.
  • Hi,

Nice choices. It will be lovely to be able to equalize using the sun. I'm a fan of fixed installs and yours looks great.
  • Wow, heck of a job! Hope it gets added to the solar installation library thread.
  • Few more shots
trying to figure out where it will go...

Sometimes you don't think that cutting wire would be complicating. I tried a couple of different way, but the sawzall with a metal cutting blade surprisingly did a good job- not pretty, but it worked

    Next, crimping on the lugs

Didn't think I would have to use my wood vise and a hammer to bend the wire (probably should have shopped around more on the wiring). For some reason I am proud of this bent- slightly bigger gauge than before

one last picture of the board before going into the trailer.

I'll update next week with the pics after installing the Rogue. That controller in the pic could only handle one panel.
Still have lots of small finishing touches, but 80% there.
    thanks for looking
