Yep it's there so when you dump the grey tank the rush of water leaving doesnt pull the water out of the P trap for the shower too. The vent stack if it has one can actually drop enough pressure to let a vacuum happen. If you unscrew the top piece and look inside it's just a simple rubber flap type seal. It opens when the tank drains to relieve the vacuum and seals otherwise. It can be anywhere in the line, the closer to the tank the better.
