Need help with my sketchy battery cable situation

I was about to replace my 2 12v marine batteries with 2 6v deep cycles, when I realized the cable situation seems strange and possibly scary. But I don't know much about battery cables, so maybe it's ...

There is no way that the positive cable has a wire going to the ground. Forget about pre-1950's American and pre-1960's British cars. Your trailer is not positive grounded. It's just not going to happen.

Cut the red tape off the cable and see what the little black wire does. If it's even hooked to the cable then that cable is the ground cable, regardless of wire colors.

Do you have a digital meter? That will solve the mystery in about 30 seconds.
