Need help with propane issue!

My propane will work fine to 6 to15 hours straight then all of a sudden the gas flow will become very low. Sometime after turning all appliances off for a little while it will start working again and then again sometime I have to shut off the gas supply and disconnect the bottle then reconnect and turn back on before it will work again. While disconnecting the gas line it is under pressure and the gas indicator is still green so I am assuming the problem is not at the gas valve in the bottle.

This led me to believe I was experiencing a freeze up at the regulator or experiencing a regulator malfunction. I have since that time replaced the regulator with a high capacity dual auto change regulator. When I changed this out I discovered a 16” low pressure line that leads from the regulator to the copper tubbing which distributes the gas was leaching oil and getting soft. This line was replaced as well.

Everything appears to be working fine for an extended time then all of sudden the gas flow will slow way down again. Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any ideas what the problem may be?
  • the cold temps will cause the regulator to freeze up, and although its not desirable, its normal.

as for the OP's problem, if its not a freeze up problem, ive seen the identical symptoms from a faulty regulator, and I have also seen them once where the fitting was not fully tightened into the OPD valve..
if the gas flow is good for several minutes and then fails, I would bet its one or the other of these issues..
  • Not sure where you are traveling at this time but I'm having the same problem with propane at home. But mine is only when outside air temps are below 20 deg F. I have two 100 lb tanks outside using for the gas stove. I spoke with the local propane dealer who told me they can add a shot of methanol to the tank the next time I bring it in for a refill. Says it happens quite often when temps get cold. If you are in cold country you may be having the same problem. Until I need a refill he told me to heat the regulator with a hair dryer. That works long enough to cook a meal but is a PITA heating it up when its in the single digit temps.
  • You might disconnect the regulator, take each line apart at the appliance and using compresed air blow the lines back out. Reassemble everything and try again. Since there is a small ammount of oil in propane, it is possible has blocked things.
  • Where are you? Provided that is not a secret. And what is the low temperature?

“copper tubbing which distributes the gas was leaching oil” Leaching oil? Please elaborate.
