Need to install battery disconnect...recommendations?

New trailer does not have a battery disconnect switch and I’d like to add one. Planning to add it in the basement storage next to the batteries for simplicity and would like to allow power to jacks even when disconnected. I like the simplicity of the throw switch since it will be locked inside and out of the weather, but what I’ve found attached to the battery post. I’d prefer to not have to open the battery box to hit the disconnect.

Any recommendations?

  • Thanks for the replies. Good recommendations. Valhalla makes a good point on disconnecting everything since i’ll be in that compartment anyway if I’m hitching/unhitching.
  • Go to any marine store and ask for a battery disconnect switch.

I don't care for the separate key as it can get lost. As long as the switch is in an enclosed area, not much chance of someone messing with it (if they break into the compartment, they can pretty easily wire to get past the switch).

I also wouldn't wire the landing gear separate. I'd rather have certainty that the power is down for everything, if I'm working on the system. Since it's so easy to flip the switch on if I need to run the landing gear, I don't see much benefit.
  • You will have to wire the landing jacks motor directly to the battery(ies) if you want them to operate when the battery(ies) are disconnected.
  • I'm old-fashioned. I like stuff that never breaks and is overkill to the max. I also like glancing at a switch from 20 feet and recognizing if it is off or on.

I refused to use anything else when building commercial fishing trawlers.

Maybe it's because I have seen the insides of every switch on the market. Go figure.
  • I've been using the Hella type (with removeable key) on all my TTs, boat and classic car.

Add some security when taking the key - easy/simple to install and 100% reliable. Available at most Marine stores

Blue Sea m-Series, your choice depending on how many batteries and what you want the switch to do. Mine is a single battery 6004 ...

... but next season I may install two batteries and replace the 6004 with a 6007. Durable and dead reliable. :B
  • Perko makes high quality disconnects (all H/W is SS).
I've had several of them including our new TT and never had an issue.
