I have used some PWM synthisers they can indeed mimic most any wave form you like and a very simple filter can smooth out the wave so it it truly a pure ____ wave (Fill in the blank with several different wave forms, depending on what you want).
In fact, it's not all that far removed from technology we all use nearly every day, Digital audio, (Be it televison or CD/DVD/BlueRay/Computer/MP3)
For digital audio (Audio can be anything from a pure sine wave (Flute) to some very complex waveforms (Vocal Cords, (Meaning multi-part vocal) or some strings or hammered instruments) and the way Digital works is to sample it say 44,000 times a second.. Then they use a multi bit encoder (Say 65,535 levels) and store, then play back later by converting back to audio.
This back conversion can be done two ways. Either bigger bytes cause STRONGER signals (higher voltage) or it can be down by varying the pulse with.
And it is rather hard to tell a CD recording from LIVE.. (Epically if I record it with my "Ears" (Binural Microphones) and you use Cans (Headphones) to listen.
