Hi,
When, oh when, will some one do an awning that is a solar panel?
You hit the nail on the head. We have flexible, thin-film solar cells. This isn't as efficient as your mono-crystalline panels, but for the surface area, it is about getting something on the surface and converting photons into electrons.
I've wanted roll-out awnings with solar panels. Not just the normal one, but on each slide-out as well. Maybe even a dedicated one that, but can be pulled out up to 30-40 feet so if one is boondocking in the desert, there is a lot of power coming in... plus it gives useful shade for storage. The awning wouldn't even have to be on the top, it could be lower down... it would lose the benefit of being shelter, but it will would provide electricity.
I've even seen window film that works as a solar panel. It likely is only a few watts... but even a few puny watts can at least fight parasitic discharge when a unit is in storage.
