Generators being quite thirsty for propane is definitely true. However, at a house, one can have a few 20# cylinders laying around for a barbecue drill, and if stored out of the weather, can provide fuel many years later. Stash gasoline for six months, and it is carb rebuild time.
At a cabin with a fairly large propane tank permanently mounted, it works well enough for a weekend there in the summer.
When out boondocking, it provides a nice safety factor... four hours on a 20# bottle may not sound like much... but it is nice to have that.
