We have used the free version of Copilot on my wife's iPad for a several years as a secondary navigation aid. We have a Garmin as our primary but Copilot lets my wife check our routes and make suggestions of side trip or alternate routes. She use to do this with paper maps but spent all her time finding where we were on the map, now the iPad does that part for her.
