I'll say this again...
ANY and I mean ANY...significant flooded lead acid battery "improvements" such as efficiency, lifespan, cyclability, abuse forgiveness, anything AT ALL, will first appear in solar voltaic, and golf car battery production. Not in some gyro gearloose RV battery reseller propaganda. There is far too much money at stake for OEM to be tardy in incorporating significant techniques into the serious cycle prone battery market.
I'll provide an easy-to-understand example: When plate enveloping was introduced in the late 1980's, early 90's, manufacturers rushed to incorporate it into everything from engine starting batteries to deep cycle batteries. Envelope separators stopped plate mossing, growth emanating from the cell positive plate bottom coupling to the negative plate beneath the conventional separator. This caused needless battery failures.
Any individual responsible for telecommunications battery bank maintenance can verify that full calcium battery banks are designed principally for 20% depth of discharge, 80% remaining. The grid alloys afforded absolutely minimal watering, and voltage loss during periods of inactivity or storage. If repeated deep discharges are forced upon a full calcium battery they are DIFFICULT to restore to 100% capacity. Identical battery banks, one with 5% antimony the 2nd with calcium calcium construction, can compare this way (typically) cycle both banks 200 times to 20% remaining charge (80% discharged), the calcium bank may endure 100 cycles and lose 40% of it's storage capacity. The 5% antimony bank may endure 400 cycles and lose 30% of it's storage capacity. I am not familiar enough with new - age AGM 2-volt cells to offer relevant information on their cycle lifespan.
EDIT EDIT
Someone may talk circles about reserve capacity retaining. If the unit was in any way superior to the competition it would have a longer warranty period. The boys in fluorescent ties and paisley shirts strike again. Anyone care to place a bet that this chicanery disappears after a few years?
