Keeping inter-connections to a minimum comes from systems analysis and design principles, consideration of statistical probabilities for failure in complex systems, and just plain common sense on keeping the number of points at a minimum that can mechanically fail.
However from most (but not all) comments in this thread supposedly from folks who know, lithium cells can indeed be scaled up so that just a few high amp-hour cells can be put in series to produce high amp-hour batteries at whatever voltage is needed - hence allowing far less inter-connections than a bunch of small amp-hour cells in parallel and then put in series would require.
I hope that's the case ... for us future RV lithium users once prices come down. I like things inherently reliable, as minimizing RV maintenance certainly requires this, among other things.
