Newbie solar questions

Let me start out by asking the experts here if the system I'm planning will work. I'm not very good with electronics. Let me also state that I don't have a lot of funds so I am trying to do this on the cheap.

I am looking at the Chinese manufactured Tracer 20 amp MPPT controller here

My friend works for an electrical supply house and can get me a good deal on a SolarWorld 24v panel in the 250-280 watt range for about $200. here

I will use 8ga cable from the panel down to the controller and 4ga from the controller to the batteries (4-5 feet away).

I just upgraded to two 6v Interstate GC2's from Costco. The only spec I have on the batteries is that the Reserve Capacity is 107. These batteries have a new item number than the previous GC2's at our local Costco. The batteries weigh 60.2lbs. I'm guessing they have about 207ah capacity?

This will be installed on a Keystone Hideout 19FLB. I only have room for two batteries, but have room for 2 panels with no shading. We have all LED lighting. This is for a family of five with three teenagers and we boondock for 2-3 days at a time. Will this system work? If I decided to get two panels would the Tracer 30 amp controller be able to handle them?

I don't remember what the rule is for solar wattage per battery capacity, but I think it was to have about equal wattage per ah? Besides wasting energy, are there other negatives to having too many watts? We are very conservative with our electricity usage, but if we wanted to splurge would having a second panel be beneficial considering the small battery bank?

Lastly, this is our first travel trailer. We bought it new this summer and will be going on our fourth trip this weekend. We used to do a lot of tent camping. We love the trailer-especially having a toilet and shower! We don't even feel crowded in it (especially compared to a tent!). We opted for a trailer with a sofa instead of a queen bed and I think that is what helps it not feel crowded.

Thanks for any wisdom you can share,
Ken

  • Hi,

250 watts is a great starter system. You can always go a little larger if needed. My RV uses about 35 amp hours daily to run the CO and propane detectors, along with the refrigerator. That is about what one of my 120 watt solar systems will make in 1 day.

2 Batteries will store enough power for your needs. It is about 220 amp hours. The 107 minutes reserve is typical of a 75 amp golf cart battery rating. That works out to about 220 amp hours at 12 volts. I have the same system - 2 batteries now. I used to have 4 batteries, but did not replace one pair when all 4 went bad a couple of years ago.

I don't do any dry camping now. But when I do, I will probably go back to 4 batteries.

Because of the solar system, you can get away with only 2 batteries, because you are making 50 - 60 amp hours daily, and only consuming 35 AH daily. So the 220 Ah will last more than 4 nights with only about 40 amp hours taken from it and not returned daily.

The other 40 - 60 amp hours are being used to run lights, furnace, water pump, ect. CPAP or something like that, then figure that 500 watts is barely enough, and you probably will need to to run the generator once in a while . If you have a CPAP, then 4 batteries is the minimum too.

    Fred.
  • Hi Ken,

Looks good to me. I'd add a temperature probe type MPPT controller.
  • The single panel and 20 amp should serve you well. #10 and #6 wire would also be fine if the terminals limit the size.

    Specs on the 20a says 260w... 30a says 390w max for.... 40 amp 520w....
I would not exceed these specs as it does not state if the power level is self restricted.

Probably stay with single 250w panel and 20a controller. If it proves inadequate just get a second system next summer.

Yes those Costco GC2 are 207s. With conservation you might not even need solar and with solar you will be much more relaxed with power usage.
