Newer Converter Synopsis Summary

The total number of various models of converters discussed is mind-numbing. Partially "yes", conditionally, and riddled with caveats, make answers virtually unintelligible.

Here is a single simple question in enquiry...

Does a single model of smart converter exist that the consumer can set absorbsion voltage limit value

AND

Length of time spent at absorbsion limit before defaulting to float voltage? Like 30 minutes...one hour...three hours...?

Can have dingle dongle control. Doesn't matter. Adjustable Absorbsion voltage limit PLUS time spent at voltage limit max is what I am looking for.

Preferably in an 80-100 ampere device.

  • Apparently one way to do the adjustable timer is to have a set of timers each for a fixed time and you add them by turning a knob/dial.

    The knob can go around once. So there is a limited number of timers you can have, perhaps 8. So if you wanted max time to be 6 hours, your intervals to pick from would be in 45 minute adjustments. If max time were 2 hours, the adjustments would be 15 minute settings.

    I think that is sort of what Mex did with his?
  • Sigh and yeah the Borg does all of the above and more, including equalization. But it's a lot of work to build. And money unless junk fearless dragon brand parts are substituted.

    Yes! It's a Prosine 2.0, and as a bonus it has PFC, and will limit its input power draw for use with a small generator. Of course, there are a few catches:

    1) You have to take an inverter you might not want.
    2) Its reliability record is poor.
    3) The cooling fan runs a lot even with zero load.
    4) It's pretty large physically.

    If somebody would build this without the inverter and good reliability, it would IMO be hands-down the best RV power converter.
  • Another way? Have two converters, one being a 100 amper adjustable voltage, and the other being a lower amp adjustable.

    Put both on the battery bank with the 100 amper set to your chosen Vabs and your oft-recommended external timer on the 120v input. (You have to figure how long it will take to get the batts to Vabs and then add your Vabs time to get the total timer run time.)

    You set the second converter to your chosen float voltage, no timer. This will be doing nothing while the higher voltage one is running, but will "come on" as though automatically, when the first one stops so you don't have to be there. The amps size of this one can be very low, more like a battery maintainer size.
  • The answer therefore is "NYET"

    Because of current hogging I never parallel power dividing devices. And three grand for a battery charger is a little ripe.

    The obvious answer is to suggest no "press a button go have a martini types" would be to spend an insane amount of money for lithium batteries because they don't care.

    "You can't get there from here" is disheartening. Meanwhile it's back to adjustable power supplies with adjustable timers.

  • I don't know of one.

    You can get what you want by using a solar controller with those adjustables as the converter.(with a DC power supply input) To keep the price down in the 80 amp range where controllers are very expensive, you would get two lower cost 40 ampers and put them in parallel on the battery.

    EP Solar has their standard automatic two-hour time at Vabs once it gets the batts to the not adjustable Vabs (14.6ish). You can get their gizmo to adjust those things, adding to the price.
