Ni-Cad To Lithium Dr. Frankenstein Transplant?

Space is limited. It'll be either AA or sub A. The charger is a DeWalt. Says it is "Automatic" on all voltages from 7.2 to 18.5 then auto shutoff. This is new-to-me decades old stuff apparently. The drill is a hex ring-collet.

Any idea as to energy density? Differential between Ni-Cad and NiMH? Almost no browser ability today. 100,000 kids are playing killer monster zombie games.
