No one is suggesting using oxygen in tires. The air we breathe does have about 20 percent oxygen but is about 79 percent nitrogen. The astronauts were in a sealed cabin pressurized with 100 percent pure oxygen which is highly flammable.
Yes, I am aware of that.
Please reread my post. Nowhere did I suggest using pure oxygen in tires. I simply stated that the presence of O2 in critical applications can cause a fire hazard that would not exist without it. Remember that at 80 psi, (typical tire pressure for RV's) air is at about 5.5 times ambient pressure at sea level. That means that the amount of oxygen present is 5.5 times as high as standard conditions. Yes, I realize that it is still mixed with nitrogen. That's all.
When an aircraft slams onto the tarmac (crashes) and fuel tanks rupture, tires (at much higher pressures than 80 psi) usually rupture too fanning the flames with what? Whatever is inside. Oxygen if present, under pressure, with a real high probability of sparks too. That's just one reason why pure nitrogen is preferred in critical applications like aircraft.
