Norcold Refrigerator

We have a 2011 Montana with a Norcold 4 door fridge. Within 3 months of towing it off of the lot the fridge quit working and a new cooling unit had to be installed.
It's now 2 years later and once again the cooling unit is pooched. Norcold won't stand behind but fortunately we have an extended warranty. $100. deductible and it's cold again. Are these units made in China now or what?

Did you try turning on the 'low ambient temp' switch?

There is none on a 1200/1210 Norcold. Doug
  • Our 13 year old Norcold 4 dr runs just fine, has good temps and still has the original cooling unit. And yes, we have had the recall work done. As far as our experience goes, Doug does know what he is talking about. Not everyone has problems with them! Only thing done to this was a new circuit board about 2 years ago --- funny, it was needed right after the "recall" work.
  • Hi Camperpaul, the outside temperature in Victoria BC where the Rv is ranges between 8 to 12 degrees celcius this time of year.

What is the outside air temperature?
  • Dougrainer: Like many on this forum we appreciate your technical knowledge but to make a statement that Norcolds should last forever or that it is unusual for the cooling units to fail is ludicrous! The Norcold is an example of mis-engineering. maybe if they were made in China the fridges would work properly. Not only do they fail they can and do start on fire. The cooling units have a very short lifespan. The units are so bad that whole cottage industry has started with rebuilt and newly manufactured cooling units. The door hinges fail. The door gaskets fail and you have to buy a whole door to get the gasket at some ridiculous price like $500 or more. Many new RV's are now coming with residential fridges and thousands of RV'rs have switched to house fridges after having problems with the Norcold. The so called recall is a joke. To state that the fridges fail due to being off level is wrong! Maybe that applies to some but there are lost of experienced RV'rs that have Norcold problems and are anal about being level. The cooling units are too small. The tubing is either bad quality or too thin. The defrost cycle is nuts. I am fortunate that mine is still working but I bet within 2 years I will need an Amish unit. Anyone who does a search on this subject will need a few moths to read about all the problems. I am wondering if you posted those statements to stir up the pot???I might add that if the lawsuits against Norcold are successful I would bet that Norcold will apply for bankruptcy protection.

  • Not made in China---the USA. Very unusual to have a 4 door Norcold cooling unit fail. Especially 2 in 3 years. You are just a victim or Murphy's law. What were the 2 failures? Leaker or just quit cooling? Doug
  • Hope you got the Amish unit...if not, expect to replace it again....Dennis
