The US and Canada are net exporters of oil.
However, we are also free-market economies.
The price of diesel in Brazil is about $0.80 / gallon. Why? The nationalized the oil industry.
We cannot tell our domestic oil producers that they must sell below world prices. The only way the gov. can control the price is to buy it on the open market, store it till needed and sell it back into the market against higher prices.
The problem with that is the US alone consumes some 390 MILLION gallons per DAY.
