Oh NO, electrical problem

Hopefully someone can help us out on this one.

1. Plugged in rv electrical cord to 30amp service.
2. Manually turned on breaker.
3. Went to fiver and smelled scorching. Opened ele. cabinet in fiver and discovered smoking and three breakers tripped.
4. Rushed out to 30amp service on house and flipped breaker off and unplugged fiver cord.
5. No electrical power to trailer via 110 outlet, however, battery backup for lights does work.
6. Checked all fuses....all OK.
7. Reset breakers in fiver, plugged cord into 110 outlet on house and still no electrical power.
8. THOUGHTS??? (have no idea on how to remove breaker panel cover in fiver...it's Cutler Hammer tt120FLGNM and tt120SLGNM; 40 amp/120v)

  • Yes, your relative blew it.
Just about anything that was on at the time will be toast.
  • That would be 240 volt service if you have a double breaker and two hot feeds. You should have a single breaker to give 120 volts only. Hot, Neutral and Ground only. See my link above.

All 120v equipment in the RV needs to be tested and repaired or replaced as needed.
  • Thank you everyone for the feedback.

Here are some answers to questions from you folks:

    1. We are at southern home now: AZ
    2. 30 amp service installed by relative on outside of house.
    3. opened 30 amp box for rv and see 2 30 amp breakers with bar on front to essentially flip both breakers on at one time, not individually.
    4. Thank you for offering to rescue us with home visit unless your helicopter is a snowbird too. :) I appreciate the offer Oregonian to Oregonian!
    5. Do I call an electrician to check it out or is there something else I could do as a process of elimination and fix this mess ourselves?
  • Where in Oregon are you? I live west of Salem and could travel to you?

  • Have you used that 30 amp house outlet before? Just trying to rule out your accidentally hooking up to 240 volt outlet.
  • Sounds like an electrical spike. Are you positive you plugged into 120VAC 30 AMPS??? And not 240VAC 30 AMP.
