The issue is one of planet depletion of resources. Buy garbage accessories, needlessly destroy energy intensive manufacturing devices and this is THE major contribution to destruction of the environment. Overpopulation cannot be discussed because it has no place on this forum. Neither does government ineptitude.
Let's stay focused on how to minimize resource and environmental destruction because of customer unawareness. Was my decision to save forty dollars per tire at Wal-Mart by choosing Douglas tires over Michelin, intelligent? No. It was stupid. I was stupid. using a tread depth indicator, the new Michelins are outwearing the Douglas tires about 1 to 4.8. Five times longer tread wear.
You haven't experience with the total cost of battery recycling. I do. Under the best of conditions of acid recovery, metals extraction, refining, reforming and plastic recycling, the raw materials reward is 12 percent. This is highly dependent on logistical process location i.e. transportation. The great penalty is energy cost of the recovery processes.
Please try and educate yourself as to the actual cost benefit ratio of recycling electronic components. It is abyssal. Electrical? Strip a transformer. Copper is denuded then recovered. Special silicon laminations are thrown into the lower categories of steel/iron and creation of new laminations is incredibly energy intensive.
Couple recycling steps. Gathering - transportation - sorting - recovery of base material - reprocessing - manufacturing - distribution - sales - consumer acquisition.
Try to compare that to a product that lasts 200 percent to a thousand percent longer.
My livelihood was and is focused on maximizing lifespan then most-efficient turnaround of automotive electrical products that PROVEN outlasted OEM originals. 2nd. Detecting and identification of substandard lead acid batteries for vendors. How intense did that get? Flooded batteries that had less than one half of one percent failure rate with a two-year flat exchange warranty.
To achieve the low battery warranty numbers the vendors had to embark on a campaign of augmented customer service. How? By offering a COST FREE CHECK of customer vehicles after sale. This drummed up an ENORMOUS increase in alternator and starter motor sales. And no, this was no con-job* Referrals of diesel engine vehicles to specialists who installed and repaired GLO PLUG circuits. The vendor gross income gained 900% in six years.
*I must have said these words five thousand times. "Your alternator tests 100% full output and correct voltage regulator operation on my test bench. You have other problems that we would be happy to diagnose and repair".
Promoting battery chargers that destroy batteries for a .0000001% statewide energy savings is LUNACY. Banning barbecue lighter is LUNACY. There are hundreds of California "testing facilities" that are operated solely to agree with California legislative efforts. My moniker for them is "YES LABS". You want proof monkey farts start forest fires? A few hundred thousand dollars will yield a ream of proof.
