ONAN - LP Liquid Genset not starting

I've searched through RV.NET, but haven't had success looking for information about my generator problem. I have a ~2004 ONAN 5.5HGJAB1271A Liquid Propane generator that won't start.

My suspicion is that the LP Liquid to Gas Converter is clogged up, as the generator (and motor home) were stored without prep for several years. I don't think the genset has more than 100 hours, but I'd have to check. (assuming it has an hour meter)

I've contacted the Cummins Onan repair shop in my area and they have limited resources and only one technician.

I'm pretty handy (just replaced both Rooftop AC's :) ) and would like to consider digging into this myself, but am a little nervous...

Any ideas about:
* Is the "LP Converter" issue a common one (or am I confused)
* Are there easy ways to check for this or other common issues?
* Will the "error codes" generated by the genset cover things like this and will they generate a code if it won't start?
* Am I biting off more than I can chew? :)

Thanks for your help. I've been reading RV.NET for years, but haven't bothered to get an account. Looks like great information with a great group and I'll try to make up for being a Lurker. :)

  • Thanks, all for the posts.

I've checked a few things, and have the following to report.
    * LPG Fuel tank is 3/4th full.
    * I checked for the valve at the tank and it seems OK.
    * As far as I know, there are no other cut-off valves. If there are, they're in the open position because I was the last one to run the generator and I haven't shut anything off.
    * Opened and removed the air filter cover and cranked through a few cycles (should cover the "intake" being clogged.
    * I did find that the "oil drain" tube mentioned by Jim had completed disintegrated. This drain is now open, and draining into the engine compartment. Since it's not run much, there's not too much oil and none that's fresh. I'll have to replace the tube. My guess is the last mechanic replaced it with something not to code.

    Now one more question:

    * I'm new to decoding the Onan and thought that the LED under the LOCAL Engine switch would blink out codes if there was an issue. Since it's not starting at all is this an issue? I assumed it would report based on failure to start also. When i press the rocker switch "down", the light goes on, but stays on. No blinking.

If I decide to replace the "LPG Oil Drain Hose" myself, where can I find parts? I got the following from the parts manual, but I can't seem to find anything other than air filters, disposables and manuals on the Cummins ONAN Store: https://www.cumminsonanstore.com/store/search.asp

    11 503?1952?06 2 Clamp, Hose - needs replacing
    12 503?2171?01 1 Hose, Drain - needs replacing
    13 504?0203 1 Valve, Fuel Shutoff - presumably OK

Thanks again for your help and your patience.

  • LP liquid systems vaporize the propane just after the fuel solenoid at the generator. As propane vaporizes, a small amount of heavy oil drops out and could clog the solenoid or the vaporizer. Most manufacturers install a small piece of pipe hanging down just past the fuel solenoid and it has a small pipe cap on it to drain the liquid. Try this first -- is cheap. Beware, the stuff stinks.

  • Had the same problem. My air intake tube that sticks out below the camper was completely clogged by mud-daubers. (a kind of wasp). Happened twice. Finally solved by covering with a screen.
  • i always keep handy some spray engin starter. give intake a shot and try to start. if you get it to fire a bit then u know you have a fuel issue.
but you could still have a spark issue also.
  • Trace ypour prpane line back to the tank....mine has a seperate vale for the gen.

So you have spark but no smell of propane? I'd be looking for a valve somewhere - it doesn't really take much to 'convert' propane from liquid to gas as long as it is warmer than -44 F outside. :)
