onan 4.0 BFA-1R/1600C

I have an older Onan generator--4.0 BFA-1R/1600C.It would not crank so I checked the output side of the start solenoid and was only getting 2.5 volts. I replaced it with a Ford solenoid which appears to be exactly the same. The problem now is that the fuel pump turns on as soon as the battery is connected and it still wont turn over. All wires were hooked up just as I found them on the old one. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Disconnect the battery NOW. The Ford solenoid may look the same on the outside but is wired differently on the inside. Find the original solenoid and look on the back of the mounting bracket for the ONAN part number. NAPA and other parts houses usually have cross reference part numbers.

    Your generator should take ONAN solenoid 0307-1617
