Onan 4000 code 41

Hey all,

My first post is unfortunately a generator not running post! Just bought a 2015 Work and Play with an Onan 4000 - 49 hours. Just fired it up to get some AC while getting all our weekend stuff moved in.

It was running for about 10 minutes then stopped with code 41. I see that the code says general rotor fault, take to dealer.

I'm reasonably handy. What are the steps the dealer will take? I'd like to cross off a couple things before having to be in the dealer before my second trip with it.
  • Glad it was a little stupid thing. Dealer said the generator was propane and my tanks were full. I pulled the service panel and saw "gasoline generator" on the label. I had just drained some gas from the fuel station. Filled it back up and we're back in business.

    Much better than a fix!

Do you have This Handbook? Maybe you do because I think there's a Code Listing in it. Where I am and with my connection I can't get it to download so I can't confirm that.

EDIT: This should be your Service Manual but again, I'm having trouble downloading and don't have a PDF package on this PC.

Good Luck, and Please let us know how you do!
  • Also check the oil level and be sure there is enough gas (full).

If there really IS a rotor fault there isn't much you can do.
Hope it is still under warranty.
  • Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't tried the breaker, I'll check this afternoon.

It is a RV QG 4000 EVAP.

First, WELCOME! You'll be answering questions for the rest of us soon.

Please reply with Model and Spec Code. Then we can try to find you a Service Manual and within that some Troubleshooting. Our 4000 is a "4KY Spec K". Look for similar on yours.

This is the speculation of an amateur, but I wonder if the genset has not been recently run, even with its low hours, the Slip Ring area could be an issue. There are metal contacts (slip rings) on that Rotor, and associated Brushes on the stationary part of the genset.

    Let's get a look at a manual...
  • Have you done the basics, look for tripped breaker, etc? I had an Onan 7000 that didn't like the transfer switch for some reason.
