I know this isn't standard way of doing things, but it's an '88 and it very well could work without a lot of work or money invested.
Throw some SeaFoam into the gas, start the generator, using a zip tie(s) jury rig the choke where it runs smooth, walk away, let it run for about a half hour keeping an eye on it ever 5 minutes or so. Shut it down, cut the zip tie, restart, and see where're you at. You never know, you might just get lucky with the SeaFoam, gas movement, and heat.
