With my previous genset (Emerald 2) I recall reading something about the circuit board needing to see generated voltage before it would continue running after releasing the starter.
The link posted by darsben is a great resource, and I highly recommend their replacement boards if it comes to that. I threw parts at my Onan (circuit board, fuel pump, and carb) to get it running well and did not regret it for a second.
I don't know what type of voltage regulator is on an Emerald (1?) so you may want to post the full model and letter spec. There are some Onan experts here on RV.Net. Good luck.
