Onan insulation inlet baffle

What is the purpose for the insulation inlet baffle on a Onan 4KY Spec K. Part 405-4896. ? https://www.dropbox.com/s/194emuy89xmwabi/Photo%20Jun%2007%2C%207%2050%2005%20PM.png

  • It's made of foam ( poor quality at that) I'm thinking that it is a sound insulator. But wondering if it does anything else ( heat insulator for intake air?).

The original foam baffle was falling apart at the end closest to the air intake to the air filter & carbutaor . It was being sucked in. Plus the baffle was skidding down and laying on the fuel pump. Hard to see that it was happening due to the black hole it resides in

I started having a vapor lock situation. I have removed the baffle ( what was left if it in a thousand pieces). Fuel pump shuts down after about 1 hour ( depending in outside ambient air) and does not start pumping again until it cools down. Have a new pump installing today, ordered replacement baffle . Looks to be near impossible to replace the baffle without dropping the Gen. And removing the housing .
