More insulation in Newmar Cypress?

Hey all, Newmar Cypress with aluminum studs, thin ply walls, and sparse fiberglass insulaltion. My son wants to add more insul, it's pretty cold/ drafty in winter, is closed-cell expanding foam a decent option? Drill holes, insert straw, and spray? Are there any accepted techiniques for this, or is it a dumb idea? Better to add 1/2" of polyiso foam board inside, and sacrifice a little interior volume? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

  • Let’s see some pics!!!!

Are you using a paddle bit or forstner bit? lol.

  • not a good idea, it isn't made for filling cavities and you would have no controle of the expansion, even using a low expanding type like the ones for doors and windoes, the interior fiber board or what ever it is made out of, could end up very wavy and just look like crap.  and to do it you would probably have to drill three holes in each stud face every 6" max all the way up the wall.

what I would try first is to close off the underside of the camper so wind can't blow under it.  you could use straw bales, plywood, foam board and so on, or a combanation.  the put a small heater under the camper and then go from there.

  • I think the first solution is perfect. Please post pics of your Swiss cheese motorhome

  • Sounds like a terrible idea to me. There is no way you would be able to drill enough holes that would allow you to distribute the insulation evenly enough that it would make a difference. And if you somehow were able to, now its full of holes. What do you do with them?
