You can get access to the neutral at that box, which should be white. Put one lead of your AC meter on the white wire there. The hot lead, however, is connected to the circuit breaker, and you said if you turn on the breaker CB1, the gen dies. You'd need to put a meter lead on one of the two leads at CB1. One of those leads should be hot when the gen is running and the other should be hot only when the gen is running and CB1 is turned on.
