Onan micro quite 4000 won't stay running.

Good afternoon,

This is my first post so be gentle...:B

I just bought a newer Class C with an Onan micro quite 4000. It runs for about a minute and shuts off. Setting a code 13.I can smell the old fuel so I pulled the fuel hose off and ran the pump for a bit until the fuel looked clean.

I drained the float bowel and sprayed some carb cleaner in it but it's pretty much doing the same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Dave

  • Southernkilowatt thanks for the nice welcome. 64T thanks for the info. Will it gravity feed or did you hook up behind the fuel pump?

    Good morning you ‘all,
Ok so this is what I found out. The gen-set cranks of the house battery only. I have to dig up my volt-ohm meter and check the status of the house battery.
It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me that it would start and run good for 60 seconds or so and then shut down because of low battery voltage but I don’t have any experience working on generators. Oh and it also set a code 12 this time.
It has 496 hrs on it so it’s time to replace the fuel pump and the fuel filter. I need to do this regardless but I would really like to figure out why it runs good for a short time and then shuts down.
  • fill a gal can with gas, pour in a can of seafoam run a gal or so through it. Put a fuel hose from carb to the can. Should clean it up. If really gunked up I had to take the carb off, take it apart and soak it in seafoam for a couple of days. Blew out everything with compressed air then reassembled and reinstalled it and it runs fine now. Just some info on what I did with the same problem. Good luck as a new carb is $280 @ Cummins.
  • Hey Dave, Sorry to hear about your genset, but you are in the right place for good advice. Welcome to the Forums, we are glad to have you here!
Never worry about asking a dumb question, I pretty much have asked them all over the years lol. Searching is easy also, just type in the key words in the search bar at the top of the page.
FYI: we all love pictures! Feel free to post pictures of your rig, favorite places to camp, etc.
    Good luck and happy camping!

  • Hey all good stuff guys and once again very much appreciated. I will play with it tonight when I get off work and see what happens.

  • Common problem with them when there is bad gas involved is fuel pump. I had one that would run for an hour then just
Die. It was fuel pump. Try seafoam in it first
  • Hey much thanks for the replies guys,

I didn't have any of the breakers on so it had "no load on it" I will check and see if it's cracking of the house battery or the engine cracking battery. It seems like it runs pretty good while it's running. Runs for about a minute and then just shuts down.

Always important for gensets, please post Model and Spec Codes. If you post the full Model Number, Spec is the last character. Somebody can email you the service manual.
Many have been lucky cleaning a Microlite (Model 4KY?) carburetor. Either by running cleaner through it, even by dismantling and soaking in cleaner. But as often as not the carb has to be replaced.
  • Don't have access to fault codes but if generator has sat long enough to have lousy fuel the chances of having a gummed up carburetor are pretty good. Suggest you use the forum search feature and use the terms "seafoam and onan".
  • Could also be

    UNDERVOLTAGE FAULT—CODE NO. 13
(Controller unable to maintain rated voltage)
Corrective Action: Reduce the number of connected appliances, especially when air conditioners and battery chargers are running.
  • INVERTER UNDERVOLTAGE FAULT—CODE NO. 13
(Controller not able to regulate to rated voltage)
Corrective Action: Check whether the vehicle engine and genset share the same starting battery. If so, and this fault occurs when cranking the vehicle engine, low battery voltage may be causing this shutdown. Increase battery capacity or install a separate battery and battery charging system for the genset.
