Onan starts and dies, throws Code 3

We hit a heat wave and had to run our generator an Onan (HGJAB901A), it quit and threw a Code I believed was "Low Oil Pressure", I assumed it was due to low oil level and refilled. Now it just starts, runs for 10 or 20 seconds and dies and throws a code 3. I didn't have the manual with me yesterday when I refilled the crankcase and tried to start so I forgot how to check for the second level code.

I'll go back maybe tomorrow but is there a reset or does the low pressure limit switch automatically reset if it shut off due to low level?

Yes I have searched to forums but to no avail, if anyone searches and finds a similar post, please include the search wording used.
  • UPDATE I reread the codes, Flashes Fault Code 3, press STOP, Flashes Fault Code 23, Oil Pressure Fault Switch.

I followed the trouble shooting instructions and no problems detected. I also changed the filter and oil and I disconnected the Low Pressure Fuel Pump hose and the pump is working well.

Right now I feel the problem is in the control panel which is behind the carb and air intake and which I believe will require removing the entire generator. It is a pretty simple job but if I did that, I would be at the end of my knowledge. I would assume that a Onan authorized repair shop would also just change the control module or PC board or what ever it is called.

I would have to build a cradle to rest on my floor jack that would support the four corners of the generator. Too big a job and I have no space to do the work. I would have to do it in the street in front of the house and the DW would not like that.
  • Fault 3 is a general code that indicates you need to check for a secondary code.  After it does the 3 flashes, hit the off button only once and a secondary code will pop up.  I'm having that issue right now with only 40 hours on the generator.

Your crankcase should only be filled halfway between "ADD" and "FULL".

Not sure if you are aware but you are responding to a post that's 7 years old. OP hasn't been on here in some time.
