Onan surging/backfiring. Brand new fuel pump/filter/carb

No idea what I’m doing. My Onan 5.5HGJAB - 901A on my 2000 Fleetwood Bounder bought used is killing me. Ran ok but rough when I got it. Then, would run for a bit and then shut off. Pulled the full full line and noticed the pump wasn’t feeding fuel into the carb. Replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. Gen ran for a bit a few times. Then, after a while, would run then shut off again. Then, wouldn’t start unless I sprayed starter into the carb. Then would run but surge. Then started backfiring. Decided to do a couple of seafoam gas can carb clean outs. Thought it helped. But then kept at it with the surging and backfiring. Had someone look at it. Decided it was the carb. Replaced the carb today. Tried to start it just now. Same issues. The guy who came to look at it said I might have an issue between the pump and fuel tank. But, when I did my gas can carb clean outs, I was running a fuel line from a mix in a gas can under the RV bypassing my fuel tank. I’m lost. Anyone have any ideas? The guy who came to looked at it checked the spark and the plugs and they checked out. When I prime, the pump runs but then quiets down. Kind of sound like it’s sputtering air into the carb with the fuel. I’m sure that’s bad. The fuel line connected to the fuel pump between the carb used to have a proprietary hose clamp but I had to cut it off when I replaced the fuel pump and put an after market clamp that uses screw and it won’t fit down around the fuel pump like the old one. Is it possible I’m getting an air leak there? Could that really be it?
