Onboard converter amps output for battery charging

I can't give a qualified answer. Check the literature with the AGM bateries.
Our Load center or whatever the term has settings for the charger and converter for AGM. AGMs charge at different rates than Lead acid.
Check the manual for AGM batteries or if manual setup get the specs from mfg and set according to that.

My WFCO runs at 13.4. I've never actually seen higher but haven't checked many times.

It does charge at 55 amps. Trouble is most WFCO are stuck trickle charging at 13.6 volts.
Need 14.4 to 14.8 to actually push those 55 amps into the battery.

Batteries only overheat if they get hot. Stupid simple rule but charger manufactures assssssssssume customers not want to go anywhere near their batteries, ever. So they pick 14.4 And THAT is a car alternator voltage regulator set point!

My WFCO defaults to 13.6 far too soon. And it has 18" lengths of factory wire connected to a Lifeline AGM. WFCO is the YUGO of converters. Yeah. Start a big generator, run it three hours and find your single battery 65-70% charged by a converter that brags it's rated output supplies 65% of the battery's total amp hour output. This is about as GREEN as a wild coal-field fire.

BUT BUT BUT

Converter manufacturer's NEVER get sued for customer negligent overcharging. And that is the hidden REAL GOAL of converter and charger manufacturers.

I've seen a depleted partially sulfated flooded group 31 suck way more than 17 to 20 amps when the charging source is seeking 14.4. In fact it maxed out my 40 amp charger for quite a while before attaining Absorption voltage.

if my flooded 100Ah battery reached absorption voltage of 14.4v+ with just 17 amps, it either is above 80% charged, or is heavily sulfated.

The Wfcos are notorious for never seeking 14.4v, and charging slowly, and failing prematurely.

I removed one from a neighbors RV, replaced it with an Iota dls-45. He is a battery abuser but claims he now always has enough power for overnight with just his generator to recharge where with the Wfco the batteries were always struggling..

I have taken its heatsink and fan, the 80mm Addo fan now with relubed sleeve bearing is exhausting my electrical cabinet at a reduced rpm from a Noctua inline resistor cable, and amp draw of only 0.04a.

A clamp on Ammeter is a wonderful tool, as long as it measures DC amps. Many will say AC/DC but only measure AC amps.

With this clamped over one wire from Wfco or at the battery, one no longer has to guess. But expect to be dissappointed with the number you see flowing into batteries when the Wfco is the charging source.

You may well need 1 or 2 hours of generator time once or twice a day.
Need to conserve on lights too.

If you had a voltmeter you would be able to judge better where your charge is at.

Lowes sells a clamp on amp meter that measures both AC and DC amps for about $80. If you get the $40 one, you will be disapointed, as it will not read DC amperage.

Then you can clamp the meter over one of the wires, and measure the DC amps. It will also read DC volts, and if you are charging at say 14.4 volts, it will be putting out the max amps. A full battery resting is 12.8 volts. Most chargers sit at 13.3 volts once the battery is full, and it has slowed down on the charge amperage. It should stay at the 14.4 volts for either 4 hours or until it is only putting out say 25 amps, then it will automatically drop back to the resting voltage around 13.3 volts.

Battery science says if you hit your battery bank with 14.4VDC charge voltage it will demand 17-20AMPS from the source for each battery in the bank. Your converter/charger source must have enoough capacity to handle the demand.

This will re-charge your batteries to their 90% charge state in about three hours time. It will take a full 12-14 hours to charge the batteries to a full 100% charge state.

A 90% charged battery bank will have a good 99% of total capacity for you to use when camping off the batteries. However you must do a full 100% charge state for your batteries if you do more thean 10 or so 50% to 90% charge state cycless otherwise you will start doing damage to the batteries...

You can run higher DC Voltages but then run the risk of overheating the batteries and boiling out their fluids... This is why the Industry picks the 14.4VDc rate. Does minimal boiling out of fluids for the short time of charging...

This is all posted in most of the Progressive Dynamics Manuals for their various chargers like the PD9200 series.

We camp alot off grid and have our battery bank expanded to run all the things we want to run in ONE DAY and not drop our battery bank DC VOLTAGE to lower than 12.0VDC. Then the next morning we will connect our trailer up to our 2KW generator using a RV30A-15A long adapater and run the on-board PD9260C converter/charger to recharge our 255AH battery bank back up to its 90% charge state in a three hour generator run time. usualy do this at breakfast each morning. Then we are good to do this all over again for the next day/night run off the batteries... Have done this method many times over the past few years when camping off the batteries. Stll have the same batteries that was installed in 2009...

I never had any luck with my WFCO 8900 series unit ever going into BOOST charge states. It always just produced 13.6VDC for me... Changed it out in 2009 for the PD9260C converter unit... 13.6VDC will take days to recharge your batteries to their 90% charge state. Progressive Dynamics says "Required 40-hours to return the battery to 90% of full charge and 78-hours to reach full charge." using 13.6VDC
