Open Nuetral on Surge Protector

My surge protector light shows I have an open neutral. I have had the issue at 3 different campgrounds. The light doesn't come on when I plug into the electrical outlet but when I plug in my 30 amp cord it comes on.
Could this be caused by a broken neutral wire on the 3 prong plug on my side or would it only be caused by the source?
Thanks for any help..

This is happening on 30 amp outlets right?

Ok, here is how to test it.. First open neutral nothing should work

    But you need two thigns

one is a 15-30 adapter.. This lets you plug a lamp. fan, or other standard "Wall socket" type plug in device to the TT-30 I suggest the PUCk type for this (looks like a hocky puck with prongs)

    A Three Light Tester

Plug second into the first into the park outlet and read the indicator lights

    Photo of adapter needed

given that it happened at 3 different campgrounds odds are in favor of it being somewhere upstream of the proctector but in the trailer or trailer cord.
  • Your device cannot detect the use of cords - only that there is a problem on the supply side.

You should have a household analyzer and use it to check the pedestal and cords. For the 30A plugs you will also need a 30/20 adapter. About $10+ for both.

And wires do come loose in molded plugs. And especially if it's been damaged due to overheating.
  • Sounds like a loose neutral wire inside the transfer switch connections
You can get somebody to look at it
Or you can unplug shore power , and open the transfer switch and check all connections are tight using a screw driver to tighten them
Do you have an inverter, make sure that is also turned off
  • I am going to have it checked out. Thanks for the replies
  • I have the SSP-30 from Best Converters.com I didn't know of any way to test the power source at campgrounds, it's just that it happened at 3 different ones. Today I plugged it into my house receptacle and got the same results.
At one campground I did get a light tingle when I had my knee on the grass and touched an unpainted part of the MH.
I can do basic wiring but I am far from and electrician. :)

Although it's highly unlikely a main service cable manufactured with sealed ends will have a broken connection inside it's also not totally impossible but the solution is simple - just measure it with an ohmmeter.

Unfortunately you've provided little detail, such as the exact make / model of surge protector you have, whether you're also getting this so-called error when plugged into a known shore power source that is correctly wired, whether the surge protector still passes power regardless of the fact it sees what it thinks is an error, or whether you've tested the system with the surge protector entirely removed. What you're calling an "open neutral" may actually be a case of bonding, or more correctly lack thereof, and how your particular surge protector deals with it. You might want to read through this recent discussion I started on the subject, in my case how bonding may be an issue when using an inverter to power a trailer ... regardless, it's important to understand even if you only ever run on shore power.
