That = batteries that are a long way from full charged.
A good battery will still read 12.9 - 13+ v the next morning yet. But that would be under zero load. In 24 hrs, it could be down to 12.7 I suppose.
Some batteries will last 8 - 10 yrs, namely those that are kept fully charged.
The way you have treated yours, will be the ones that last 1 - 3 yrs.
In your case, there was not much worse than adding 2 more batteries, because instead of having 2 dead batteries, you now have 4 dead batteries.:(
