Amazingly, the automobile was thought to be a major step towards cleaning up cities and communities when it was invented. In 1894, prior to the automobile, horses left behind 2.5 million pounds of manure and sixty thousand gallons of urine on the streets of New York every single day...that's more than four hundred thousand tons of manure a year. :E
