Pan drain and refill on transmission fluid

We have 2016 Bounder and being somewhat over the top on preventive maintenance, I am thinking of draining the transmission pan and refill only. I have 15K on the unit, and being full timers, and cannot do a lot of maintenance at a lot of places we visit, I would like to take advantage of the one we are in now. Figure, I would make this a 'yearly' park (for the purpose of maintenance) if feasible to do. I understand that some old fluid will remain, but changing yearly should not be detrimental in my way of thinking. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • :h I don't think it will harm anything as long as no leaks azre generated.

BTW, what does your operator's manual say? Just curious.
  • I'm fairly sure the interval on my truck is something over 100K...BUT they want a transmission flush when that happens.
  • IIRC the recommenced change interval of the F53 is 60,000 miles. 15,000 seems overkill to me. I plan on doing mine around 40,000. Do you have the six speed? I understand that that fluid is a synthetic.
  • just my though on changing the tranny fluid, IF the factory wanted it done a lot of times. they,d have put a screw on filter and a tapped plug to change it.
  • Newer vehicle don't need the Trans fluid, and filters changed near as much as older ones. So Check your manual for the mileage markers. Don't do like i did and change it 50k too early. Truly a waste of money
  • I have drained and refilled so many THM 400 transmissions it isn't funny.

I drill a hole in the bottom of the torque converter to fit a 1/4" plug. The plug has a square INset not a square tower sticking up. It takes overnight to fully drain the converter. You need a drill correct for the 1/4" tap. Use teflon tape to seal the plug tight.

Be prepared for about 11 quarts of fluid. When it comes time to do it again you are all ready. Draining four out of 11 quarts is like taking a shower without water --- next to useless.

Don't get any chips in the transmission oil pan. Let your drain pan take it all.

I prefer genuine GM filters over Fraud I mean Fram.
  • Only you know what type of driving you do with the Bounder and how hard you are on the transmission.
Changing the fluid every year is probably not necessary. But, having fresh, clean fluid isn't going to hurt anything.
  • What does the chassis manual/transmission maker recommend? Unless they say otherwise for some strange reason, I think changing the fluid at 15K miles is throwing time and money away, just as aging out tires after one year would be.
  • I'd say that's way over the top, given my knowledge of how seldom transmission fluid needs to be changed.
